Gallery Director Alison Kelly has been involved in Aboriginal Art for well over 15 years and combines an academic training with strong practical knowledge.
Alison holds an Honours Degree in Art History and Theory from Latrobe University and also undertook further specialist studies in Aboriginal Art at the University of Melbourne. As the Gallery Manager for a major dealer in Aboriginal Art for many years, Alison gained experience in sourcing and promoting Aboriginal art and forged ongoing relationships with Aboriginal Art Centres. Alison opened the Alison Kelly Gallery in 2000 in High Street, Armadale. Alison Kelly Gallery has recently relocated to Albert Street, Richmond.
Alison's establishment of the Alison Kelly Gallery has enabled her to fulfill her commitment to best practice principles in the sourcing of work. Alison has travelled extensively to the desert and outback communities, and continues to make regular visits to the communities and art centres in outback Australia to source work.
Alison lectures regularly on Aboriginal Art and has published several articles on the topic. Alison runs a series of seminars on Aboriginal art at the Gallery each year in an effort to promote an understanding and appreciation of Indigenous art and culture.
Alison Kelly is an approved valuer of Indigenous Art post 1970 for the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.
